The performance Aller-retour et aller enters into a dialogue with “Wanda” (USA, 1970), the first and only feature film by director and actress Barbara Loden and the book “Supplément à la vie de Barbara Loden” by Nathalie Léger. In her reading of both the film and the book, Meunier blends the biographies of the film character, the actress, the writer, and other figures by exploring the process of reading and translating. The performance script got recently published in the series of bilingual pamphlets by Harun Farocki Institut.

Karolin Meunier presents a new combination of texts. With the reading “Radius”, she uses essayistic fragments to explore the limits of research and the handling of cinematic references. The occasion for the invitation is her contribution to the catalogue of the exhibition “Margaret Raspé: Automatik”. Meunier’s practice is characterised by an engagement with conceptual feminist modes of writing and speaking. The starting point is often notes, interviews or autofictional writings and films that are themselves dialogical in nature. >>>

The performance Aller-retour et aller was first presented at Arsenal cinema in Berlin in 2019, followed by a screening of the film Wanda (1970) by Barbara Loden. For HaFI 017, Meunier documents her performance script. It echoes the intertwining of three women’s quest by dissolving the biographies of the film character, the actress, and the novelist: “A woman telling her own story through that of another woman.” (Nathalie Léger). After last year’s Slash Hyphen Confusion the Studio Whisperers now present Em Dashing – the second show where the Studio Whisperers are using punctuation marks to think about the not-so-easily-defined ways of investing our sensibilities. Punctuation can be described as an archive of feelings* and these performative and affective signs are useful to indicate the processes, directions, pauses, distractions, disguises and disruptions in the work of an artist. Em dash in Danish translates to tankestreg and it isn’t easy to pin down what the em dash is used for – and even when some definition is decided upon it still feels slippery; a pause, a diversion, taking a long breath, a hesitation, an interruption, a self-interruption, a self-censoring, something hidden? In the dash, thought becomes aware of its fragmentary character.** When trying to curate a show with em dash works we were reminded of the phenomenon of eye floaters that we can only see at a special light – floating about on our retina and whenever we try to fixate upon them they move quickly to one side. Em Dashing has been curated by the Studio Whisperers advisory board using a method we call grid curating. It is a distributed way of thinking – separate, collective and without consensus at the same time. In grid curation only those who have the time and energy to take part are active. (Henriette Heise)

Template V [backdrop]: Mit einer Montage aus Bewegtbild und Lesung geht die Arbeit auf die architektonischen Bedingungen des Aufführungsortes ein und verknüpft Überlegungen zu modernistischen Bewegungsstudien und domestizierte Körper im Tanz. In Korrespondenz dazu wurden zwei Filme von Cinenova ausgewählt: Often During the Day (16 min, 1979) von Joanna Davis und Syvilla: They dance to her drum (20 min, 1979) von Ayoka Chenzira. Eine Film- und Kunstreihe kuratiert und moderiert von Stefanie Gaus, Lilli Kuschel, Sonya Schönberger und Isabell Spengler.

The material for the reading is provided by the transcriptions from a series of conversations with various individuals that were initiated by Karolin Meunier. The starting point for these conversations is the dialogue Vai Pure (Scritti di Rivolta Femminile, Milan 1980) between the Italian art critic and feminist Carla Lonzi and her partner, the sculptor Pietro Consagra. While conducting an ongoing reading and continuous translation from Italian into English, a new conversation emerges which comments on the original text and is equally reflective of the historical context for Lonzi’s book as its various modern interpretations. The subsequent screening of the film Scuola Senza Fine (Neverending School, 1983, 40 min., IT) by Adriana Monti is an important reference point for this research. >>>

Der Fahrende Raum focused particularly on planned and unplanned wandering as an artistic form and pedagogical score this year. This issue of the annual Flugschrift addresses process-based forms of work, as well as the different meanings of roaming around in educational and artistic enquiry. A stimulus for this was also the artistic work and life of Gusto Gräser, the artist’s artist, traveling poet, Schwabing Bohemian, painter, Monte Veritàs co-founder, and dancer. Der Fahrende Raum’s actions and research in 2018 are examined in texts here and the invited authors negotiate them in relation to their own perspectives.

Mit Carla Lonzi erörtern wir die im Rahmen heutiger Kunst & Politik-Debatten wieder intensiv rezipierten Schriften einer Autorin, die Ende der 1960er Jahre die Kunstkritik aufgibt, um das gemeinsam mit der Künstlerin Carla Accardi 1970 begonnene Projekt Rivolta Femminile voranzutreiben. Eine Kooperation zwischen Maximiliane Baumgartner und Karolin Meunier, mit Studierenden und Gästen. „Phasenweise nicht produktiv“ richtet den Blick auf das Verhältnis von Performance als künstlerischer Form und der Vermittlung selbst als performativem Akt. In einer beweglichen Rauminstallation mit Architekturfragmenten des Fahrenden Raums versammelt der Aktionstag Personen, Gespräche, Recherchen, Auftritte und Objekte. Sie erzählen von radikaler Raumwahrnehmung, Cyborgs und Female Technologies, von Versuchsanordnungen und Archiven, die sich nicht ästhetisieren lassen, von Abweichungen des Offiziellen, der Kritik an und den Alternativen zu institutionalisierten Lehrformen und einem imaginierten Publikum.

GET RID OF MEANING is the first comprehensive exhibition of American avant-garde writer, poet and essayist Kathy Acker (born 1947 in New York City, died 1997 in Tijuana, Mexico). Several manuscripts, sketches, notebooks, photographs, videos, music, and audio recordings, as well as many books from Kathy Acker’s personal archive are presented in the documentary part of the exhibition. Voices from the Off

‚Voices from the Off‘ presents five artists’ films that investigate the relationship between the ways we experience the world and the ways we address this experience through language. The programme looks at that which is ‘on the tip of my tongue’, that which cannot be spoken for psychological, linguistic or semiotic reasons. These films are formally conceptual and rich in theory, but they do feature a relationship between image, language and audience that is rather visceral, sometimes almost culinary.

WE (Not I)

Beginning with a week of events across South London Gallery, Flat Time House and Raven Row, the discussions and presentations of WE (Not I) will revolve around the topics of: accumulation in collaborative art practice, the development of a “we” (non-singular) voice in art authorship, the gendered nature of art historic genius, female value, piracy, empathy as a radical position, and the edges of the self in relation to both circulated imagery and the medicated body.

Daily private work meetings between the female participants will evolve in a way that both reflects and enacts the idea of the ’non-singular‘ voice of artistic production. Sharing and discussion throughout the week will be the principal mode of practice, acting as a site of productive space for each of the participants.

Close Viewing ist ein Format, in dem das Sprechen über und mit Filmen und Videos aus und mit feministischen Beweggründen stattfinden kann. Ausgehend von der Film- und Videosammlung von Cinenova, wollen wir einmal im Monat zu einem Filmabend zusammenkommen, Filme gucken und gemeinsam darüber sprechen (lernen). Es werden auch Videokünstler_innen eingeladen deren Arbeiten in Bezug zu Filmen aus dem Cinenova Archiv gezeigt und besprochen werden.

Select and Dispossess – Festival with Cinenova

Cinenova is a volunteer-run organisation based in London dedicated to preserving and distributing the work of women/feminist film and video makers. It was founded in 1991 following the merger of Circles and Cinema of Women, each formed in the early 1980s. Cinenova currently distributes over 500 titles that include experimental film, narrative feature films, artists’ film and video, documentary and educational videos made from the 1920s to the present. The festival at Kunsthalle Exnergasse introduces the film and video collection of Cinenova as well as the collective practice of its Working Group. It offers the opportunity to watch and research pivotal works from the history of feminist, black, queer and experimental film and video, and to consider together how they activate the present.

SELECT AND DISPOSSESS wants to evoke discussions and alternative approaches to the production and distribution of culture through film and video work. The series of screenings and events have been organised in collaboration with local groups and people. The programmes include questions of how geopolitical hegemonies are built and how they are racialised, gendered and nationalised, and how the different political and social forces imposing limits onto the body can be critised by means of moving image.   >>>

Yvonne Rainer gilt als eine der zentralen Figuren des amerikanischen Postmodern Dance und hat wie kaum eine andere Choreografin das Interesse der theoretischen Reflexion auf sich gezogen. Sie ist zugleich eine Ikone des experimentellen, feministischen Films der 1970er Jahre. Im Rahmen der umfassenden Ausstellung „Yvonne Rainer. Raum, Körper, Sprache“ im Museum Ludwig findet in Kooperation mit dem Zentrum für zeitgenössischen Tanz Köln ein Symposium statt, das genreübergreifend reflektieren möchte, auf welche Weisen sich innerhalb ihres Schaffens intermediale Verbindungen erkennen lassen und welche Bedeutung und Einfluss sie jeweils für die Bereiche von Tanz, Kunst und Film hat.
